For the longest time, mint choc-chip milkshakes have probably been my favourite flavour of milkshake. Cool, creamy, and refreshingly moreish, they know how to hit every part of the dessert flavour spectrum, all whilst giving you your chocolate fix.
This creamy vegan chocolate-peppermint smoothie will satisfy any craving for those mint-choc-chip milkshakes from your childhood. It’s definitely more like a shake than a smoothie, and I can tell you it makes a flipping good dessert, snack or even breakfast, using natural ingredients that’ll nourish your body from the inside out.
For me, chocolate and peppermint are a match made in heaven, and when the medium is a smooth, cold, creamy slurpable beverage, then I’m definitely gonna be down.
Chocolate-peppermint smoothies are something I’ve been enjoying for some years now. Once you get the hang of creating delicious chocolatey smoothies with healthy whole plant ingredients, you start to like playing about with different flavours. By adding a couple of drops of peppermint oil or a handful of fresh mint leaves, you can really take the classic chocolate flavour to the next level.
Speaking of which, you will get a slightly different flavour with this smoothie depending on what ‘mint’ ingredient you go with. Peppermint oil will give you a sharper, colder and perhaps sweeter mint taste (the one you’re probably familiar with in mint chocolates), whilst fresh mint leaves will add a milder, greener, slightly more ‘savoury’ mint taste (the one you’ve probably enjoyed in cocktails and jugs of Pimms). I enjoy both, but I have a slight preference for the peppermint oil as it makes this smoothie taste a little less healthy than it really is. I’ll let you guys decide which you like best.
Though you can use your own choice of sweetener for this smoothie, I use medjool dates (although any dates really will work). Dates give everything an incredibly sweet, slightly ‘caramel’ taste that makes an awesome substitution for refined sugar, whilst also providing plenty of fibre, iron and potassium.
When it comes to the chocolatey component, I recommend using the best cocoa powder you can afford. You can of course use raw cacao powder, and from a health perspective I recommend it, but cacao can be high in caffiene and keep you awake at night if you drink this smoothie before bed. I tend to use cocoa powder if drinking this smoothie anytime after 5pm, and cacao powder if I need an energy boost during the day.
The more cocoa powder you add, the stronger and more intense this smoothie will be, so I recommend starting with 2 tsp and working your way up to a tablespoon.
Other cool add-ins include hemp or chia seeds (gotta get those omega 3s!) and a pinch of your favourite adaptogen powder (if you’re into that), such as maca, reishi or chaga. You guys know I don’t do protein powders, but if you do then a scoop of hemp, pea or chocolate flavoured protein powder would probably work really well.
Creamy Vegan Chocolate-Peppermint Smoothie Recipe
- 2 tbsp raw cashew nuts, soaked for 5-10 mins (you can skip the soaking and throw them in as they are, but soaking them will give you a richer, creamier shake consistency)
- 1 cup plant milk of choice (add more if you like your smoothie more runny)
- 2 tsp-1 tbsp cocoa/raw cacao powder
- 1-2 medjool dates
- 1/8 tsp peppermint oil (this stuff is SUPER strong – believe me you only need a couple of drops! Alternatively you can use a handful of fresh mint leaves)
- 1 tbsp hemp or chia seeds
- 1/2 tsp maca powder, reishi or chaga for an adaptogen boost
- Cacao nibs/dark chocolate chips (scatter on top or pulse them in whilst blending for added texture)
- Place all ingredients into a high speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
- Add more milk, if needed.
- Serve with a sprinke of cacao nibs/dark chocolate chips and a sprig of mint.
- Slurp & enjoy!
