DISPOSING OF AWKWARD STUFF. 📦All of us have probably got stuck at some point during our low-waste/sustainability journey. Actually scratch that - it’s an uphill battle often entailing many stuck points. One of these is knowing how to responsibly and sustainably dispose of those awkward odd items that tend to accumulate around the home. You know the ones - lightbulbs, batteries, old electronics, used/empty makeup etc. Our first thought is probably to put them all in the bin, but many of these items can be disposed of in much more environmentally friendly ways and don’t actually belong in landfill. 🤯We definitely don’t live in a perfect world and our current recycling systems still leave a lot to be desired. BUT...it’s getting better by the day! Sometimes it just requires a little more research.While packing to move house I did a lot of decluttering and naturally came across all kinds of odds and ends. Some of these I’d been saving up so I could safely dispose of them all in one place and I suggest that we all try to do the same if we’re able to. Here are a few ways to get rid of these pesky little random objects:LIGHTBULBS💡& BATTERIES🔋- These can be safely disposed of in the dedicated bin at your local supermarket.
OLD/USED MAKEUP💄- @maybelline actually now have a dedicated makeup recycling scheme where you can safely dispose of your old empties. @bootsuk, @superdrug and other high street stores have many accessible points. Just check online to find your nearest.
OLD/USED MEDICATION (including inhalers)💊- These can usually be taken back to your local pharmacy to be disposed of - much safer than putting them in landfill.
OLD CONTACT LENSES & CASES - Thanks to @terracycleuk, you can take used contact lenses and accompanying cases to dedicated disposal points at Boots stores - just check the website to find the nearest. (Whatever you do, do NOT flush lenses down the toilet!! This can lead them to end up in oceans and washed up on beaches.🙅🏼‍♀️🚽)What awkward things have you purged from your home recently?? 👇🏻👇🏻

We did it! We finally moved house...in a pandemic, with two weeks official notice, to a city/region neither of us were super familiar with, aside from a fair bit of desktop research we’d done in the last few months. 😂 But we did it nonetheless! We had a great team helping us move (all covid-safe of course) and I honestly do not know how we could have done it without them. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻In a way, I’m kind of glad it all happened so quickly in the end and that we were forced to make a move in a short space of time. All those months umming and ahhhing came from our inner uncertainty and hesitancy to just the bite the bullet and go with it. I think we were worried about making the ‘wrong’ choice or about selling ourselves short if we took our next steps too quickly, but in the end we were simply overwhelming ourselves with options so I fully believe everything all happened the best way it possibly could. Isn’t it strange, yet also incredibly super cool, how the universe looks out for us like that? 😜✨Anyway, things have been a little hectic but also really lovely. The organisation obsessive in me is out in full force as we continue to unpack and sort through some last bits, and we’ve been really enjoying getting to know our new local area. Everybody nearby is so bloody sweet and friendly and we’re just a stepping stone away from some gorgeous parks and walking areas. It makes me feel so blessed I get to live here and we feel confident we made the right choice. 💕Tell me what you guys have been up to in April so far in the comments! ☺️👇🏻 And while I know this pic was taken in our old house, I’ve definitely been wearing this @tentree loungewear set more than a few times this last week or so. 👌🏻😍.

Has anybody else been feeling their energy and motivation fall further and further by the wayside lately?? Despite my best efforts, maintaining a regular sleep-wake cycle, keeping up with healthy habits and doing ANYTHING creative has felt like an ongoing battle ever since Christmas.Sometimes I’ve been winning - there have been weeks where I’ve jumped out of bed early every day to do yoga or a workout; fitted in a daily walk and have managed to make time for creative projects. Other days just getting out of bed at all has been a real chore - knowing that the day is going to be pretty much the same as the day before and the day before that really KILLS your motivation! It’s difficult to keep up momentum, excitement and curiosity for the day ahead when your brain knows exactly what to expect, which I’m sorry to say is the phase I’m currently in now, and have been for the last few weeks. 😅 And as for anything creative?? FORGET IT!! My brain has felt like mashed potato.Maybe it’s just me and the lack of fresh air I’ve been getting, or maybe it’s the fact that I’ve been sitting between the same four walls every day since last March...or maybe it’s that my head is just too full right now with moving house stuff and practical things. 😂😂 Whatever it is, I don’t think I’m alone in feeling this way, as other people I’ve spoken to have reported exactly the same feelings. Keeping up with any healthy habits or hobbies has required sheer discipline, rather than doing them for the pure enjoyment, and while it’s great to be able to rely on such a strong sense of will, it would be nice if the enjoyment element could come back and pay us a visit too! 😆How about you guys? Don’t be fooled by this calm serene Sunday scene. I’m currently trying to keep everything together after finding out we need to vacate our current property in two weeks’ time and don’t yet have a place to live (no I’m not panicking, you’re panicking).In the meantime, I finally finished the book ‘Eating Animals’ by @jonathansafranfoer. 📖 It’s been a regular read on my nightstand for some time now, and I really wanted to take my time with it as it’s been quite a heavy read and the sheer volume of truthbombs required some reflective time to process.
If you currently eat animals, I highly recommend giving this book a read - it’s probably essential. And if you don’t eat animals, then I still recommend reading it as I guarantee you’ll be bowled over by some of the revelations made about stuff you may never have known or thought about before. 🤯In the meantime, I hope everybody has been enjoying a peaceful, relaxing Sunday. 🙏🏻💕A huge Happy Mother’s Day to all the busy, brave, incredible, loving and epic mums out there. Here’s hoping this will be the last Mother’s Day we have to send our wishes via FaceTime. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🌸.

It all started with me finding an old sachet of Nando’s lemon & herb peri peri marinade and some peri peri salt in the kitchen cupboard one evening. Before I knew it I had created this - baked peri-peri tofu on a wholemeal pitta with salad & sun-dried tomatoes, oil-free baked peri-peri fries and a side of hummus. Delicious. 👌🏻😋 You can read more about how I made this over on the @everythingspeachyblog feed but it’s pretty straightforward really. 😝Also this will be my go-to until @nandosuk pulls its finger out and puts the actual GOOD vegan burgers BACK ON THE MENU (vegans don’t all want to eat processed faux meats, FYI).What are all your Friday night plans?? Not gonna lie, I spent most of last week in this gorgeous French terry joggers & sweat from @tentree. Not only are they super soft and comfy, the quality is really beautiful and they’re also made with organic cotton and recycled polyester meaning they required much fewer resources to make. Have you ever wondered why the cost of meat can be cheaper than a punnet of strawberries?? 🍓OR why you can buy burgers in fast food chains for as little as £1? 🍔The answer 👉🏻 agricultural subsidies. Government subsidies are financial grants, funded by the public’s tax money and given to private institutions or public entities, in order to drive down production costs and make whatever is being subsidised more financially viable. 💵It is reported that globally, the public provides more than $1 million per minute in global farm subsidies, but only 1% of that figure goes towards helping the environment. 🌎 The majority of this money goes towards helping animal farms and also towards crops like corn and soy (which are primarily used to feed animals). In other words, the majority of our tax money is being used to drive down the price of the same products that are DESTROYING our environment, as well as being a LEADING CAUSE of our most deadly diseases and illnesses, drastically INCREASING our risk of infections and zoonotic diseases, and causing MAJOR unimaginable suffering to tens of billions of animals every single year.The animal farming industry actually receives so much of taxpayer’s money that on average, each head of cattle gets a subsidy of around $2.20 a day...which means that the annual income of an EU dairy cow exceeds that of half the world’s human population!! According to @defrauk, around 90% of the annual profit of farmers who graze livestock is funded by government subsidies...meaning that a farmer who is given £44k in subsidies will still only earn £12k a year. 😐 In comparison, only 10% of FRUIT FARMERS’ profit comes from government subsidies. 🤯If you ever thought of meat as a cheap, convenient food option...think again. It comes with a huge hidden cost - both to the environment and to the taxpayer. It is also incredibly inhumane. Our money is being used to prop up this destructive industry that has shown to be in no way financial viable. How much longer can we go on paying for the demise of our health and the planet??It’s time for a reform in agricultural subsidies. The best way to kickstart this is by going plant-based. 🌱

WHY I DON’T EAT FISH. 🐟🐠🐡Fish was actually the last animal product that I stopped eating. Like most people, I believed it to be a “healthier” alternative to chicken and other meats and so rationalised keeping it in my diet. However, the more I learned, the more I couldn’t ignore that fish belong in the ocean - NOT on our plates.Yes, fish CAN theoretically have some healthy properties, such as being a reliable source of protein and omega 3 fatty acids. However these benefits are vastly overshadowed by the fact that the majority of fish is incredibly high in mercury, microplastics and other toxins we put into the ocean, so by consuming them we are actually inviting these foreign polluting substances into our own bodies. Protein and omega 3 fats can also be found in a variety of plant foods, such as chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds and spirulina, to name a few. Also, ALL fishing actually has a devastating impact on other sea mammals and the ocean’s delicate ecosystems, no matter how “sustainably” we think we’re sourcing our fish or how carefully we extract them from the ocean. (I’ve actually gone into much more detail about this in my Insta stories if you fancy having a look.) 🌊🐬🐳🐋🦭🦈Finally, every fish and sea mammal that’s dragged out of the ocean is a life that has to go through tremendous suffering - all for the sake of a momentary meal. Whether they’re suffocated when pulled out of the water (to put into context - this feels the same as drowning for a human being), or are crushed under the incredible weight of all the bycatch they are part of in the huge trawler nets, or actually die having their throat slit open by fisherman once on deck...there is quite literally NO “humane” death available where fish are concerned.We can talk about saving the oceans through boycotting plastic straws and not flushing trash down the toilet. But unless we stop eating fish, the oceans are inevitably doomed. The documentary @seaspiracy (coming to @netflix very soon) seeks to uncover the truth behind the fishing industry and explore the damage we are doing to this beautiful ecosystem. How do you sleep at night?? ✨🌛😴Does anybody else here get the sleep anxieties? I tend to really struggle to get out of my bed in the mornings lately...but come the evening, I’m filled with anxiety about bedtime - usually worrying about how much I’ve got to get done before the day is over; wondering whether I’ve been “productive” enough throughout the day and then thinking about the day ahead and worrying about whether I’ll manage to get enough sleep to prepare for it. Not exactly the ideal recipe for a peaceful nights rest, is it? 😂Many people claim they struggle to get a great night’s sleep on a regular basis, but what we don’t realise is that so much of this has to do with our MINDSET. If we approach sleep with dread, trepidation, stress or view it like a chore or an unenjoyable experience, it’s likely to be just that! Sleep in reality should be effortless and enjoyable for everyone - no matter what you might “believe” about your own ability to sleep well. Some of the most common myths and misperceptions we can have around sleep are:“If I’m struggling to fall asleep, I just need to try harder.”“If I don’t fall asleep soon, I won’t be able to function tomorrow.”“I must try to get at least 8 hours of sleep.”“There’s no point in me trying to get a good nights sleep - I’ve just never been a good sleeper.”All of these negative ideas and perspectives on sleep are often based on outdated or unfounded scientific evidence, false assumptions and/or modern rumour. And what’s worse - they’re actually getting in the WAY of us getting the rest we need!!My latest blog post talks all about sleep and the changes we can make to start getting more of it.
